Sioux Falls Wildlife Removal Tip of the Month: Why Do South Dakota Groundhogs Even Dig Holes, Do They Live Underground?

Groundhogs are solitary Sioux Falls creatures. Unless they have to raise their babies, they prefer to live alone in their burrows. They have a stout body and short feet that are armed with strong and sharp claws that they can use for digging. Groundhogs are burrowers. They will have two types of den that they can use during the summer and the winter season. Their winter burrows are normally used for hibernation.

Groundhog Dig Holes to Build Burrows

The South Dakota groundhogs are digging holes to establish their burrows close to the source of food. They can create a very complex burrow system. While in the process of creating their burrows, they can excavate more than 700lbs of soil. This amount of dirt is only for a single den. According to the study, one groundhog may have as much as 5 dens that are located in different parts of its territory. They will change their location depending on the change on the weather and the availability of the crops.

Location of the Groundhogs Burrow

The abandoned burrows of the groundhogs will be occupied by other burrowing animals such as South Dakota raccoons, skunks, and opossums. The usual location of their burrows would be found at the thickets and fence lines that border the corn and hay fields. They can also be found in the fruit and vegetable farms. The bushes and trees allow the groundhogs to escape the threat of the farm dogs, fox, coyotes, and other predators.

When choosing a place to establish their burrow, they will look for a soil that is well-drained. They will never dig holes in a swampy or damp location. They also try to avoid areas that are stony. It is relatively easy to determine the main entrance of the woodchuck's burrow. There will be a tiny amount of soil exposed on the entrance. This will appear to be a small mound that gives the groundhog a better view of its surrounding. If you happen to notice loose soil in your garden, this can be an obvious sign of groundhog infestation.

The Problems Related with the Digging Habit of Groundhog

Groundhog holes appearing in our Sioux Falls yard will translate to costly repairs of your lawn and property. Our underground wiring and watering system will accidentally be damaged by these creatures. The holes also make it troubling to keep our lawn well-maintained. Those professionals that are tending our yard can acquire injury and their equipment can also be damaged. They can accidentally damage the root of our plants that may stun the growth of the plants or destroy it.

Using exclusion methods is perhaps an excellent solution to stay away from the damages related to their digging habit. You may choose to erect fences but be sure that you will bury it at least 1 foot to deter their digging habit. It should also be high enough that will prevent the creature from climbing over. In case none of the deterrents are effective against the active infestation, it is time to let the professional handle your situation.
